Answer 2 of the 3 questions below. Each essay should be 2-3 pages long (1 inch margins, 12 point font, no more than double spaced). All essays require you to draw connections between material in different readings: in Q1 as a compare and contrast, while in Q2 and Q3 one reading provides a theoretical framework which you are to apply to a second reading.
You do NOT have to summarize the reading as part of your answer (don’t worry about proving you read the entire chapter). The focus of these questions is the application of ideas in the text.
You DO need to refer to the specific parts reading(s) that you use throughout the essay. A good essay will directly and explicitly connect points in one reading to issues in another, or with question #3 will directly and explicitly connect aspects of the intervention described in the newspaper article to elements of the readings.
Q1. The relationship between stress and health is an important contemporary issue. The CSDH-WHO paper, in chapter 5 (week of 9/21), discusses socio-environmental/psycho-social circumstances as “Intermediary Determinants” (pgs 38-39), while the article on Jedi Public Health connects stress to marginalized social identity as a significant factor in shaping health. Compare and contrast the perspectives on stress and health in these two articles; in what ways are they similar and in what ways different? How are they complementary and how contradictory?
Q2. Chapter 4 in Structural Approaches (week of 10/12) introduces the concept of structural violence, and then goes into a brief discussion of mechanisms mediating the relationship between structural violence and health (pgs 48-51). Apply the concept of structural violence to the issues discussed in the article Black Lives Matter: A Commentary on Racism and Public Health.
Q3. The attached New York Times article describes the long term impact of an intensive early childhood educational intervention on the health of the adults who participated in it as children. The health outcomes of this educational intervention illustrate some aspects of the social determinants of health in SA Chapter 3 (week of 9/28), and of policy intervention in CSDH-WHO chapter 6 (week of 10/12).
CHOOSE ONE of these two class readings, EITHER SA chapter 3 OR CSDH-WHO chapter 6 and discuss how the educational intervention illustrates key issues in the selected chapter.
Some tips for getting started:
1. If you really dislike or disagree with one of the readings, then you might skip the essay which includes that reading. A graded essay is not the best place to pick an argument with an author.
2. Identify the key issues in each reading which are most relevant to the essay (focus on particular issues, not the entire chapter).
3. For Q2 and Q3, connect key points in the theoretical reading to illustrative points in the second reading
4. Plan how you will organize information in the essay, maybe draw a diagram or make an outline or whatever works to help you organize your thoughts. Then start writing.
