An individual’s emotional intelligence (EI) influences their ability to manage interpersonal relationships, both professionally and personally (Rubens et al., 2018). One component of EI is self-awareness, or the ability to look inward to understand one’s own emotions and their impact on others (Whitney, 2018). Rubens et al. (2018) highlight the importance of self-awareness to those in leadership positions because it allows for objective self-assessment of attitudes and behaviors in relation to professional goals, relationship building within an organization, and the ability to accurately assess others. For example, a nurse manager may receive feedback that they had handled a recent situation poorly and are given tips on how to more appropriately handle similar situations in the future. When provided with this feedback, the nurse manager with strong self-assessment tools can identify their emotions and reflect on how to react in line with what will be best for their personal and professional goals. In this situation, although there may be negative emotions because of the criticism, the nurse manager can identify that the feedback was not intended as a personal attack but rather as an opportunity for personal and professional growth. The nurse manager can take the feedback and learn from the experience, making them a stronger leader in future situations.
